“You still love Orli?” the question seemed to echo in the stillness of the room, which was only broken by the faint noise of the news on TV Sean had been watching.

“What?” Sean asked, sure he must have misunderstood Viggo. Since his breakup with Orli, Viggo had never pushed him, never been this direct.

“It has been almost three months now… Do you still love him?” Viggo repeated the question, his voice still low and soft as he looked up from the book Sean had thought he had gotten lost in.

“Yes,” the answer was quick, automatic, without thought. Viggo put the book down on the table and sat down beside Sean in the sofa, forcing Sean to move a bit to make room for him. Sean’s eyes were puzzled as Viggo turned to face him, his eyes serious yet strong. He had wrestled with himself long and hard about whether or not to do what he was about to do -- but time was running short. In a little less than five months Sean would be leaving NZ. This was a chance too rare and precious to pass up… He talked with his son, Henry, about everything and of course he had told him about Sean. As with his role as Aragorn it had been Henry’s advice that he should ‘go for it,’ as he had put it.

“Do not try to glorify what you two shared. He never admitted he returned your feelings at all, he didn’t care how you felt about him flirting with others -- and he left you. Frankly, would you still say you loved such a person had it been anyone else but him?” Viggo’s tone wasn’t hard or cold but soft and sincere, just wishing Sean would understand…just wishing that he would look his way. Being this close yet so far from Sean was becoming torture.

“But he wasn’t anyone else!” Sean almost yelled but then shook his head and ran a hand through his hair. “Christ. What do you want from me?”

“The truth.”

“Yeah, well… If I knew what that was I wouldn’t feel like shit, now would I?” Sean bit sarcastically, wishing Viggo would just shut the fuck up. His love life was fucked up enough already without Viggo adding more confusion to the mix.

“I know there’s something… magical and drawing about Orli. Everyone feels it but…” Viggo stopped, not wanting to say ‘he’s not what you need’. It would sound too arrogant. He saw Sean’s darkened and confused eyes. This wasn’t the way he had hoped this would play out. In his mind Sean had always at least said he wasn’t sure what he felt for Orli now.

“I can’t give him what he wants,” Sean finished for Viggo, thinking Viggo had been concerned with Orli and not him. Viggo frowned; probably true since Orli had left but that wasn’t the point here. He cared deeply for Orli; he was a great friend but he loved Sean and thus he wanted this conversation to be about him.

“Sean...” How to say it? “I want us to be more than friends,” he said all in a rush, amazed at how calm his own voice sounded. Sean’s eyes grew as big as teapots in surprise. “I love you,” he quickly added, not caring what would happen afterwards. He needed Sean to know. This was too important for pride and fear to get in the way. Silence was between them and for the first time ever it felt awkward.

“Sean… Say something,” Viggo pleaded and took both of Sean’s hands into his own. Sean looked down at their joined hands and to Viggo’s happy surprise he didn’t draw back. Then as Sean lifted his eyes to look at Viggo he saw love, confusion, fear and a million other things reflected there.

“You’re my friend… You’ve done so much for me. I love you too,” Sean admitted, his voice so quiet Viggo had to lean in closer to hear it. Sean thought for a while about how to continue. Had this been anyone but Viggo he would never have been this honest but Viggo brought out the best in him. His own honesty and openness inspired Sean to try and be the same. However, that it was Viggo he was sitting with was also one of the things that made his heart ache. Viggo was more obviously a “man” to Sean’s mind that Orli had been. Being with Viggo would make Sean feel more… “gay” somehow. It didn’t make sense, even in Sean’s own head, but that was how he felt. On the other hand Viggo was his friend and as such, he felt it was all right to feel this tingle of warmth come over him each time he saw Viggo, thought it was all right that he loved the embraces and feather light kisses Viggo had placed on his forehead when he thought he had been sleeping. That had been calming, loving and filled him with joy just as simply seeing him come walking towards him would bring a smile to his face. However to move beyond that…it would change everything and Sean wasn’t sure if he was ready for that.

“But?” Viggo pressed, trying to hide the pain he felt as he noticed Sean’s thoughtful expression.

“I’m not sure I’m *in love* with you,” Sean explained softly, his eyes falling away from Viggo’s. This wasn’t what Viggo had wanted to hear but this wasn’t a fairytale. Just because he admitted his love didn’t mean Sean would fall into his embrace…even if that thought had been pleasing in the extreme.

“We’ll just have to wait and see then,” Viggo said softly as he gathered his courage around him. Sean’s answer hadn’t been a no…there were still hope. Sean smiled at him before he leaned in closer and laid his head on Viggo’s shoulder, almost experimentally -- as if to see if he found it nice or not. Viggo lifted his arm and put it around Sean, pressing him closer.

“I guess we must,” Sean agreed against Viggo’s neck and a feeling of warmth and contentment settled over them both. Viggo bent down and kissed the top of Sean’s head lightly and they watched the rest of the news on TV like that.
