Summary: Viggo’s hurt and lonely

Sean was jarred awake by the phone on his bedside table. Shaking his head to clear away the sleep-fog, he reached out blindly. “ ’Lo?”

“Hey, Sean. How’s it goin’?

“Vig? Whatsa matter? Are you okay?”

“Oh. Shit. Forgot about the time difference. Sorry. I’ll call back later.” Viggo’s voice was soft, and Sean heard it get even softer – Viggo was already moving the receiver back toward the cradle.

“Wait! Vig, what’s up?”

A small hesitation, then “Nothing. Well, nothing much. I just wanted to say hi.”

Sean sat up in bed, fully awake now. It was unlike his friend to be so retiring.

“Tell me, Vig.”

“Sean, I….”

“Tell me.”

“Shit. You’ve been able to read me like a book since the first day we met, haven’t you?”

Sean smiled, nodding to himself.

“I’m going to have surgery tomorrow, Sean, and I just…”

“WHAT? What kind of surgery? What’s wrong? Vig, tell me this minute – what’s wrong?”

“Just a little surgery on my knee. Nothing major. But….I’m just afraid that it’ll….” Viggo’s voice trailed off again.

“What?” Sean’s voice was soft, hating to hear fear in his friend’s voice.
