Claimed

Once a year, on that certain date, Viggo liked to come back here, to the place they’d taken their first holiday together. The people here knew both to keep that date for him and to keep their distance.

And every year, he’d set out the two chairs, hanging his things – claiming – on the side he’d always sat, poured a drink and, yes, one for Sean, too.

And waited. And hoped.

For so many years, Sean didn’t come, but now as he looked out of the window, Viggo saw footprints in the sand and watched as the empty chair was . . . claimed.
