Introducing Rugbytackle: The Yahoo!Group

...and yeah, I know all the bad points about Yahoo but Tripod, listmania, etc. all have their own bad points. I went with big, commercial and unlikely to get us into any major trouble given the number of RPS lists already hosted there.

Click above to join the mailing-list version of rugbytackle. This is NOT, I repeat, NOT intended in any way to replace this LiveJournal community or its redundant backup at JournalFen. This is simply a service for people who can't always get onto LiveJournal due to computer glitches or who are out of town and can access e-mail more easily than the web. It is not intended to be a discussion list; I would prefer that discussion remain online here and between individual writers and readers. The list is a service so that people can get Sean/Viggo, Aragorn/Boromir etc. fiction delivered to their inboxes if they can't read or post on LiveJournal.

Right now the community is being moderated by myself, cruisedirector and ashinae; when milochka joins I am going to make her a moderator as well, so she can get what she needs for the archive. We are very hands-off moderators so don't expect regular updates to the rules, which will be the same as the rules for this community (with the obvious exception of the need for cut tags).

By popular demand we will not permit attachments. If you have a photo or file to contribute, which is highly encouraged, please upload it into the Photos and Files sections of the group on Yahoo and send a notification to the group. You might also want to post an alert or link here.

Again, since people seem concerned about this LJ community suffering if we have a mailing list: this is IN NO WAY intended as a replacement for Rugbytackle right here. It's a supplement so we can all find each other during the next inevitable Night of the Dead LiveJournal and other dark times.

OK, one request: Can you make the archives available to members? They're currently only available to moderators.

I actually might be more willing to post things to a list, really, because it's a pain to post things to so many different LJs, especially when it's only a drabble or LJ is being a pain. You'll definitely see me over there. All hail the rugbytackle!

This is a particularly stupid question, I'm sure: but presumably in order to have my fic appearing on the list I am going to have to join the list and post to it?

I'm not trying to be difficult I'm just drawn that way but I gave up posting anything to Yahoo lists several months ago, for what seem to me very good reasons.

Unfortunately yes, unless you want to send your fic to someone else who can post it for you. There are ways to delete your fic from Yahoo archives, to turn off all marketing preferences and to mask your IP address, if any of those are your concerns.

Woo! Now it's gonna be so much easier to try to read stories while I'm at work. It will look better if I'm checking my email than if I'm checking LJ. All my coworkers like to see what I'm doing on the computer. hehe

No, I didn't. I tried an exclamation point, removing words in case I was over the limit and everything else under the sun and Yahoo doesn't want to show it.

Hey, awesome timing on this! I was going to post a PSA/update this afternoon about the archive site -- my webhosting's being set up as we speak, and lamath is helping me out with the site's database coding.

Depending on how much time I can spare for it this week, the site might be ready by this weekend... I'm quite excited. (Then I just have to sit back and wait for the deluge of fics waiting to be archived. *g*)

Normally I have no patience for Yahoogroups, but of course I'll go sign up for the rugbytackle one. :-) Thanks for adding me as a moderator whenever you get around to it. Like cee said, I do hope the list won't start to take over the LJ "experience"... I doubt it will, but lists tend to turn into their own mini-communities sometimes. You know how it is, I'm sure.

I feel like the opposite has happened...that all my lists have gone dead because everyone is over on LJ. (FellowShip for instance, the Aragorn/Boromir list, is nearly silent, but I find fic about them in communities here.) So I am not terribly worried about the list being any threat to this LJ. I worried more about people posting stuff on JournalFen that they weren't posting here and fragmenting the community between the two.
