[personal profile] karelian posting in [community profile] rugbytackle
I was looking up a body of water in New Zealand for travel-related purposes this evening, having nothing whatsoever to do with LOTR which was the furthest thing from my mind. My son has a good friend whose family is from there. And in the course of looking I stumbled across this:

Whangaparaoa Bay

A succession of picturesque bays leads to Whangaparaoa Bay (Cape Runaway), 50km (31mi) west of the North Island's East Cape. The beaches are deeply shelved and littered with driftwood, and the old Anglican church, nestled under Norfolk pines on a lone promontory, should not be missed. Cape Runaway can only be reached by foot, and it's advisable to seek permission before going on private land.

And in case it was just me, I sent the quote, unsolicited, to two innocent people with no preface whatsoever, and you know what they both said? "It's the unlit Anglican doorway [from 'Communion']!"

And I am not saying another word, as I have already incriminated myself enough. (I am such a f---ing hypocrite for posting this...you'd think I could just swear off this sort of speculation and be DONE with it, but noooo...)

Thank you for posting this! I hope there's a photo somewhere on the web of this church that is the subject of so much speculation (and wishful thinking). And I am so glad you're not quite ready to be, well, anything anything other than you are. Face it, you're an academic doing research on post-modern Danish-American poets. No harm in that.

Whether this is actually the "unlit Anglican doorway," this (http://myhome.naver.com/ucnet2007/NI%20Eastland%20&%20Gibsborne/NZP%20Eastland%20East%20Cape%20Raukokore%20Church-01.jpg) is definitely (http://myhome.naver.com/ucnet2007/NI%20Eastland%20&%20Gibsborne/NZP%20Eastland%20East%20Cape%20Raukokore%20Church-02.jpg) the church (http://myhome.naver.com/ucnet2007/NI%20Eastland%20&%20Gibsborne/NZP%20Eastland%20East%20Cape%20Raukokore%20Church-03.jpg) referred to in that article. it's all right, I've been sidetracked into planning my vacation for next year. I think I will go to the Shetlands for ten days or so in May.
