PSA: Rugbytackling Site News

Hi folks... as those on the site's mailing list already know, we've gone to a completely new system for the Rugbytackle archive site. At 400+ fics and rising, we simply outgrew the old system! The site now works faster *crosses fingers* and Searches are much improved.

This new system has a couple of features (currently switched off) that I'm considering switching on IF there is enough interest.


1. Submit your own fics to the archive, plus edit/delete your own fics. You'll also be able to see how many times each of your fics has been read (which can be good or bad for the ego) and be able to move chapters around in a series.

2. Favourites -- this works just like LJ Memories (you can keep a list of your favourite fics and authors for whenever you want to re-read them).


To submit/edit fics or access your Favourites list, you would need to log in to the site; but you wouldn't have to log in if you just want to read fics or do searches, etc.

So, how many of you would be interested in these features? Would they be worthwhile? Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Hi hon! The new site looks fabulous - so well done you! I've seen your busy sign on Y!M and assumed you were doing things with this and therefore didn't disturb you..

To throw my two pennyworth in, I wouldn't mind being able to submit and edit my own - would that take work off your shoulders? (will email you separately about one of mine that looks as if the formatting has gone a bit awry)

And the favourites one is a nice idea.

Thanks sweetie! *hugs* I like it too; hopefully I won't get bored of it too soon. Actually, another feature of the site script is making "skins" (different layouts) and being able to switch between them any time. Pretty neat.

Yes -- I should have mentioned that -- the formatting in some fics went whacko during the conversion to the new system. I didn't have time to check all 400 fics *g* so if you ever notice that the formatting is screwed up in a particular fic, PLEASE drop me a line so I can fix it up, it'd be much appreciated!

I like the Favourites idea too... it's a neat feature. Especially since we have so many fics archived now; it's hard to remember which ones you liked. Even with LJ Memories, once in awhile I wade through it and go, "Oh yeah, I forgot about THAT fic, it was awesome!"

Yay! Looking forward to that. *G* Nope, it's not a hassle to activate those features, really -- and it'll save me a lot of time if people submit their own fics (although of course I'd still be happy to do it myself if authors don't want to for whatever reason).

And I know what you mean about the disappearing time *scratches head too* -- I got back from vacation 10 days ago and I'm not sure what I've been doing since then I know it's not work though *snort*

... and what is this scripting that lets you change 'skins'? I like the sound of that!

Yeah, the ability to "skin" the script is mucho cool -- to create a skin, there's only about 10 template files and one CSS file to change. And once the skin files are copied to the server, users can change their preferred skin anytime they want (once they login, of course). Very, very neat.

Now just to find time to create more skins... unless there are any volunteers? *g*

I think the options are good ones to activate, have seen them in use at other sites using same scripting. One site I know it's great - if I get a chance I update the fic, if I don't their archivists update it for me.

Thanks so much! And thanks for your opinion on the features -- it seems like a lot of people would like to have them. I think it'll save time and hassle for everyone involved, and make the site easier to use.

The site looks wonderful--thanks for doing all of this for us!

I'd definitely be interested in both features... I know I haven't sent anything to you yet (work in high gear, again... argh!), and it would make me feel less guilty to take some of the work of your shoulders.

Love the Favorites idea--would make the "I only have five-ten minutes, what do I read" choices easier.

I like number two better than number one. With number one, you might end up with fics that are improperly whatevered: not SeanVig, not warned for the right stuff (if at all), etc. I'm a fan of the see how many times it's been read and moving chapters around. *g*

re. 1 : it would be neat to be able to upload/edit etc. and it would maybe take a bit of work off you (and leave you time to write and play with bathbombs and pretty boys *g*). And seeing the number of hits on a fic would be wonderful (btw, I've been getting a lot of email feedback from people who've read the fics on the site *hugs you*). But as Lanna I think you'd end up with all sort of stuff uploaded no matter how many warnings as to what kind of archive it is you put up. So it's a mixed bag.. what about a trial period? would it be possible to go back to only the dominatrix webmistress uploading the fics if you see it doesn't work?

Hi! Just wanted to say I love the new layout. It's more functional and easier to use.

I agree with Lanna about the uploading feature, but if it makes your life easier go for it. The favourites thing I like.
