Sean smiled as he heard the front door open and close, having not locked it since he was expecting Viggo back soon.
“You’re back early,” Sean called from where he sat in the living room, his eyes still on the newspaper he had been reading. He put the paper down and stood up to greet his friend. Since Viggo’s admission that he wanted to become his lover Sean and him had become closer, sharing hugs and kisses now and then but Sean still didn’t feel ready for more. His past with Orli still felt unfinished and until he felt he had found closure in that matter he didn’t feel ready to think about a new relationship.
“You know you said you wanted to see the ocean at nighttime… Something about light and stuff. Anyway, I found this restaurant by the sea and I thought…” Sean had turned towards the door but the person greeting him wasn’t Viggo but Orli. “…we… could…” In shock, his voice died out.
“Hey,” Orli spoke softly and drew nearer, yet stopped on the other side of the table, a hint of nervousness and hesitation to his movements that was unusual for him.
“Orli,” the word was somewhere between a prayer and a curse.
“Could we…talk?” Orli asked softly, forcing the words forth as he nervously rubbed his hands together. If it weren’t for the lump in his throat Orli’s words would had made Sean laugh since they hadn’t spoken alone and privately together since their break up. Now all he could do was nod numbly. Elegant as ever Orli seated himself on the sofa and Sean sat back down in the chair beside it that he had just left.
“So…talk,” Sean offered, his voice hoarse from suppressed emotions. He had played out this scene so many times in his dreams -- only this wasn’t a dream.
“Yeah… Okay,” Orli cleared his throat and Sean noticed the pain in Orli’s deep brown eyes. ‘Pain… because of me?’ Sean wondered confused.
“I’m…Oh, Hell, Sean,” Orli shook his head, trying to find the right words. “I’m sorry.”
“What for? Being with me or leaving me?” Sean was amazed at how calm his voice sounded. Inside he was shaking.
“For leaving you,” Orli admitted softly and his warm brown eyes stared straight at Sean. Remember to breathe, Sean thought to himself as he got lost in those depths. He felt a familiar feeling of weakness, a willingness to surrender and do whatever Orli would ask of him. No, he shook his head. That scene wouldn’t play again. Not now. Not when things were finally getting back on track for him. He had tried to make things work with Orli and they hadn’t; getting back together after a breakup was very rarely a good idea. It would be too easy to fall back into old patterns and repeat old mistakes.
“Did you… love me?” Sean cursed himself for having asked that. It was unimportant now; it was over. Didn’t matter. Yet he found himself hanging on Orli’s lips, waiting in breathless anticipation as his lips moved to form words.
“I still do,” Orli admitted kindly and reached out for him, his arms inviting. He loved him! Joy and warmth flowed over Sean and melted his defenses. Like a puppet with its strings cut Sean found himself moving until he sat besides Orli, his arms around him as he held him close. He ignored the warning voice in the back of his head as he pulled Orli close and breathed in his scent.
“I’ve missed you so much,” Sean found himself whispering into Orli’s hair, throwing caution to the wind in the light of seeing a dream come alive.
“Tell me again now. Tell me you love me,” Orli whispered softly, now knowing how much he wanted someone to love him and admit to it.
“I love you,” Sean did as asked with no second thought, the feeling of joy lying as a blanket around his mind and heart, making the admission come easily to him. There was no doubt in his mind; he did still love Orli and he probably always would.
“Kiss me,” Orli’s breath was hot on his cheek, sending waves of desire through Sean. He bent down and sought Orli’s lips, parting his lips as Orli’s tongue demanded access. It wasn’t a soft kiss but hard and demanding and it didn’t end till Orli drew back, out of breath. Orli smiled happily at him.
“I knew you loved me,” he said warmly, feeling happy beyond words to know that Sean’s love was true and pure and nothing like the betrayal he had once been subjected to.
The warning voice in Sean’s mind grew louder as suddenly he realized something… Orli still hadn’t said he loved him. He pulled back and out of Orli’s embrace.
“You still can’t say it, can you?” Sean asked sadly, accusingly.
“What do you mean?” Orli’s eyes narrowed as some of his happiness faded in the light of Sean’s withdrawal.
“Say you love me,” Sean challenged, realizing this was the first demand he had ever made of Orli. The younger man froze. His lips began to move, wanting to do it, knowing he did love Sean but something still held him back; a fear he had not yet mastered. Sean looked almost hypnotically at his lips, his heart beating wildly in his chest but no words came out.
“You still can’t do it, can you?” Sean stood up from the sofa, needing some distance between Orli and himself. It was too tempting to be that close to him.
“Sean… It’s just words. They don’t matter. Come… Let me show you instead,” Orli stood as well, desperate not to lose Sean now, wanting to find a way to make things work despite this. He walked around the table to Sean before he reached out his right hand after him. Sean looked from Orli to his outstretched hand. What more could he ask? Orli did want him. Did the words really matter? He could have Orli… Be with him. Wasn’t that what he wanted? Sean’s hand moved towards Orli. Wasn’t this what he wanted? Wasn’t Orli the one he wanted?
The End
TBC in “Make Up Your Heart”.
Author’s notes: Never fear…Viggo returns in the next chapter. Thanks for your patience.
