Music was playing softly from the radio in the living room, the air was warm but not suffocating, there was a gentle wind blowing, stars had begun to appear on the summer night sky and small animals made calming noises. All in all it added to the serene feeling Viggo had inside and having Sean curled against him, his head on Viggo’s shoulder and one hand on his chest didn’t hurt either. Viggo smiled to himself as he with one hand held Sean closer and gently bent down and kissed the top of Sean’s head.
“Hmm,” Sean mumbled in unintelligible pleasure at Viggo’s caress but didn’t otherwise react as he continued to look out over Viggo’s starlit garden. They sat together on Viggo’s porch on a bench and had a great view over the wide and beautiful landscape behind Viggo’s ranch.
“Sometimes I can’t believe how lucky I’ve been,” Viggo admitted softly, his eyes on the starry sky but his thoughts on the man in his arms. Twelve years ago when he had let Henry talk him into playing Aragorn he had never expected he would find what he had been looking for; someone to share his life with. He had fallen for Sean only to see him in turn be spellbound by Orli’s charm as had so many others. He had thought his role in Sean’s life would only be as a friend and had tried to adjust to that role. Lady Luck had let things turn in his favor -- or more correctly Orli’s loss had been his own good fortune. Friendship had grown to love and looking back Viggo didn’t regret a thing. He had no doubts about Sean’s love. He knew his lover still had a special place in his heart for Orli but that was all right; Sean was here in his arms and in his home. He had made his choice and he had stayed.
Though at what price? Viggo frowned. From time to time he had wondered about that. What price had Sean paid for his happiness?
“Sean?” he asked, his voice soft.
“Yes?” the other man’s reply was muffled against his chest, his voice sleepy. It was late and the peacefulness of the setting was not making it easier to stay focused.
“Are you happy here?”
Sean lifted his head and looked surprised at Viggo, all signs of tiredness gone from his face and eyes.
“Of course.” Confusion was clear in his voice.
“You’ve given up so much for this…” Viggo’s voice was sad at the thought. Sean’s youngest daughter still wasn’t talking to him, and he had left his beloved England to live with Viggo on his ranch, though he had kept an apartment in England for them when they visited his other daughters. They still wanted to move to Europe, probably England when ten years had passed since the day of their marriage if that marriage could not be legalized in America but that day was still a long time away. As Viggo had decided upon since their marriage he had worked furiously for human right organizations to try and get same sex marriage legalized. However, sadly, so far they were still met with a brick wall of intolerance. Since they had also both worked to further equal rights in general Sean had been surprised to find that despite equal laws then discrimination based on skin colour, religion, nationality or anything else for that matter was still common and not the rare occurrence he had thought and hoped it would be. The injustice of this gave him the passion to keep fighting to change things no matter how impossible it at times felt.
Sean had felt peoples’ intolerance personally when he had lost fans who saw themselves fit to judge his personal life which had annoyed him to no bounds. Having had the image of a ‘guys guy’ many of his fans had been unable to accept his choice in life partner. His career had suffered further since most of Sean’s fan base was in England. Even though he still played in some English movies and theaters and they often visited England and stayed there till Sean’s films were made, the loss was still noticeable as it was limited how much he could travel there when he also wanted to spend time with Viggo. Viggo’s own career had barely been touched by his relationship with Sean. If anything his artistic work had been more sought after because of it for some reason Viggo didn’t care to ponder.
“Shh,” Sean put a finger to Viggo’s lips, efficiently silencing him. He shook his head at Viggo and smiled softly. “It was always my choice and it was worth it. I love you and want to be with you. It’s that simple.”
“Yes, but…” Viggo began again, still feeling at fault for Sean’s loss. Any more words were cut off as Sean’s lips covered Viggo’s. When Sean drew back, his eyes were serious.
“No, don’t doubt yourself like that. It was my decision and mine alone.”
Viggo nodded, though he still felt the familiar wave of guilt over all Sean had given up to be with him. They sat in silence for a while.
“We could move to England now if you want. We could even move to London,” Viggo finally offered, though he knew he wouldn’t care much for life in a big city. He loved his ranch, his animals, the clean air, the beauty and the lack of people. For Sean, though, he would move anywhere.
Sean smiled warmly and kissed him again, this time lovingly and soft.
“Thanks. That means a lot to me but I like it here,” Sean said as he drew back and added, “You like it better here as well.”
“I do,” Viggo admitted.
“Besides…we have time. Our ten years isn’t up yet,” he said with a smile but with a serious note to it. Tearing down peoples’ prejudices proved a much harder battle than any Sean had ever imagined. For some reason many people seemed to think it was perfectly acceptable to openly discriminate against the homosexual community and to silently discriminate against other minority groups like for example the large Hispanic minority group.
A short silence settled between them as Viggo thought the same thing as Sean; it would be a long and hard battle to win equal rights all around but unlike Sean he had always had faith in the general goodness of the human spirit. An idea hit him and Viggo suggested, “We could visit soon. It’s been a while since the whole gang has been gathered and both Dom and Billy and Ian and Nick’s anniversaries are coming up. We could stay for two months time and attend them both.”
Sean smiled happily. He liked the sound of that. He had missed his homeland, more than he wanted to admit. “That sounds great. You don’t have any plans?”
”Nothing I can’t reschedule,” Viggo shrugged, dismissing it as unimportant.
“It’ll be nice to see the others again,” Sean admitted, smiling.
“Yes. I particularly look forth to getting the story of how Lij got Orlando to stay with him and even tell the press about their relationship. This time he seems to be staying put.” Viggo’s voice betrayed his utter surprise. Lij had called them two days ago, all happiness and excitement and had told them that Orli had told him he loved him… in front of the press at a film premiere they had both gone to no less-- and then promptly kissed him. Unable to believe Orli had been so obvious, Viggo had needed to watch that clip on TV to believe it but there Orli’s confession of love had been for all to see and hear. Viggo had a feeling that after many years of playing around Orli had grown up enough to wish to settle down with one person.
“Yeah, well… Orli told me someone gave him a wakeup call,” Sean smirked, happy for his friends. He had been afraid Orli might never be happy and was relieved to find that he had found his own safe haven now. It had taken him long enough to finally get to it but still… Better late then never, Sean thought.
“You talked to Orlando?!” Viggo asked surprised. Sean nodded and grinned at Viggo’s expression. “Yes, at our bonding ceremony.”
“Sneaky bastard,” Viggo bummed good naturally and kissed him passionately. When they drew apart Sean smiled at him and stroked his cheek.
“No more talk of my ‘sacrifices’, okay?”
“I’ll try,” Viggo offered, though that was all he could promise. Viggo still felt Sean had given way too much to him… In no way could he deserve all that.
“Vig, don’t worry so much. I love you and I always will. I made not sacrifices but choices,” Sean explained softly, having guessed his thoughts.
“I still don’t see how you can think I was worth giving up so much for,” Viggo admitted.
“I didn’t give up anything that you didn’t bring back to me. You gave me the world,” Sean’s words were soft and warm and to hide his embarrassment at the true but sentimental statement he leaned in for another kiss.
“You’re everything I wanted from life. I love you,” Viggo whispered against Sean’s lips, having always been quicker and having an easier time with saying declarations of love.
This may not have been what he had thought he wanted from life so many years ago, Sean thought happily, but it was everything he could ever have wished for. Loving and being loved in return… What greater and better fate could any man hope to find?
The End
Also the end of this series. I hope you have enjoyed it and if so…then FB would be very much appreciated *smiles*.

Just Perfect
Date: 2004-08-25 07:36 am (UTC)I really like how you've managed the intertwined feelings. It really is possible to love more than one person and to love someone who wouldn't be good for you as a partner. You displayed all of that beautifully. Of course, it helps that your characters are strong, moral and mature.
I have only one question...Now what are you writing?

Thank you so much. That means a lot to me to hear. I wanted this series to be as realistic as possible and to capture the essense of these men so thanks again!
I have only one question...Now what are you writing?
*blushes and smiles* Actually I have one fic I've been working on but it's really dark and I'm not sure if I'll ever finish it...we'll see. Unless something happens I might just take a break from writing for a while.
Have you read my other fics on Green Opals, in my journal or on the Of Elves And Men webpage? Maybe you can give me a plotbunny from them *warm smile*
Thanks again so much for your kind words...They mean so much to me *hugs and kisses*
