Sean was flying out of New York and so far, so good. Not too much anxiety...undoubtedly numbed by the Jameson’s he knocked back at the bar and then on the plane, too. Viggo had started him on that stuff. Not a guarantee for a happy flight by any means, but it beat the hell out of going it stone cold sober. And one spent a lot less time in the loo after drinking a few shots of whiskey than they did if they drank enough beer to get a comparable buzz. So no complaints there. He’d been noticed a bit, but nothing too overwhelming and no interruptions at all since he’d been seated on the plane. He was jittery though and he was just ready to be at his destination now.

He was so looking forward to the week ahead and really felt like he was a truly free man for the first time in a while. He had no wife to worry about and no girlfriend either, having just officially broken things off with the woman he'd been seeing casually for the last two months or so. His girls were away at school and he’d spoken to them just that morning. They always had his numbers so he knew he’d be in touch with them non-stop. Lorna and Molly had recently decided their dad needed to find someone nice and had started taking a particular interest in his social life. Little Evie didn’t care about his love life but she was quite sure he needed a doggie and had been telling him just this morning about a corgi one of her school friends had. He smiled at the memory, recalling the feel of those tiny hands on his cheeks as she gave him soft kisses. He had his iPod with him – full of the Baroque music he loved as well as photos of his girls, and he pulled it out to scroll through some shots. Plus he needed to look again at the photos of the corgi puppies he planned to look at while in Spain. He smiled more broadly as he imagined the look on Evie's face if he turned up with a corgi puppy for her to keep -- for him, of course.

He was blessed with his girls. They’d opened up an aspect of himself he’d never even considered before he’d had them. He was also half-amused and half-chagrined in that the two older girls were at an age now where they swooned a bit when he told them who he’d be visiting in Spain. He wasn’t sure he’d tell Viggo that – too much teasing material to be used against him in that whole revelation, although as he thought about it, he realized that Viggo would be the last person in the world to make light of something like that.

Once on the ground in Madrid, he was to be met by a driver who would take him to the area up near Leon where Viggo had said they’d be filming. Sean had planned to grab a rental car and take his chances, but Viggo had told him that it was a closed set and hard to get close to without the requisite passes and badges, so he’d accepted the offer of the chauffeured car. He grabbed his carry-on and his iPod and met the driver out front with his baggage. They were on the highway and moving quickly in no time. Sean settled into the back and leaned into the corner, planning on passing some of the time with a nap. He knew they’d need close to 3 hours to get to Leon and it would be getting dark by then.

His sleep had been a bit intermittent in the movement of the car, but he felt pretty recharged by the time the driver roused him. Looking out, he could see that the sun was setting and the sky was quickly darkening. They were outside the gothic cathedral Viggo had told him about. The fading light made it hard to make out details but it was magnificent just the same and he knew he’d want to investigate more in the days ahead. The driver helped him with his few bags and pointed him in the direction he needed to go, providing him with the all important ID badge Viggo had arranged for. He’d need it to get past the security team and into Viggo’s trailer if Viggo was still on set. Grabbing his bags and thanking the driver for all of his efforts, Sean set off, happily setting one foot in front of the other on terra firma.

Sean had successfully passed through the gauntlet to get on the set and was approaching the area where filming was still underway even given the waning light. He could make out some sort of sword fight scene that was being blocked for filming and set his bags down, stopping to watch. Despite the heavy costuming, including hats and armor on some of the actors, Sean could pick out which one was Viggo as soon as they began to move, initiating their choreographed battle. Viggo had a way of moving that was always so graceful…leonine was the word that always came to mind when he watched him undertake any sort of physical activity like this. With the most decided exception of dancing, he’d never seen Viggo move in a way that appeared awkward or unnatural in any way. He watched him move forward on the attack, meeting a group of opponents with his sword raised in the air above him, spinning and quickly catching the one behind him with the point of his sword at his throat. One of the players working against Viggo was having problems with the sequence and called for a break, during which Sean saw Bob Anderson scuttle over to walk him through some of the motions.

If there was one thing almost every cast member involved in the LOTR films remembered, it was the basic sword positions and the associated numbering scheme. Sean was mentally counting to himself as he watched the actor stringing together the positions the scene called for. Bob looked happy with the order and was trying to get the actor to speed it up more to get back into the scene. While this went on, Viggo stayed in character and continued to step through his own routine unopposed. It really was beautiful to watch, Sean thought. These motions were similar to – yet different from – what they’d done on LOTR, however Viggo once again seemed completely at ease with the motions and totally immersed in it. He continued repeating his motions until the end of the day’s shoot was called and the group started to break apart. The plan was to reattack the scene in the morning.

As Sean stood there watching, Viggo shook himself out of the scene, walking over to Bob and the other actor and sharing a few tired laughs and offering what looked like encouraging words to his peer. Patting him reassuringly on the shoulder, he made his farewells and started off set toward what must have been his trailer at the end of the lot. He’d not yet noticed Sean and that was okay. Sean wanted a moment or two to say hello to Bob anyway. He’d catch Viggo in the trailer in a few moments.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When he knocked on the trailer door twenty minutes later, he didn’t hear any response. Opening the door and calling his friend’s name, he stuck his head in and was met with the sound of a running shower. He knew how much Viggo liked to stand in the shower forever using every ounce of hot water so he just went on in, figuring he’d better put the beer he’d brought – Newcastle Brown, of course – on ice so that he and Viggo had a backup stash. Just as he’d set his bags down and pulled out the beer, he turned around to open the refrigerator – and ran smack into a very wet, very naked Viggo.
“Sean!” Viggo had obviously not toweled off in the least but that didn’t stop him from wrapping his arms around his best friend. In fact, Sean wasn’t quite convinced that the crazy American didn’t go out of his way to get him as wet as possible. They broke from the hug, both of them laughing.
“Nice to see you, too, Vig," Sean said, one eyebrow raised. “Didn’t really expect to see you in all your glory right out of the gate, but it’s a warm greeting, it is.”
Viggo snorted without a shred of embarrassment. “You told me you’d seen my previous movies back when we were in New Zealand, so either you lied or this is all old news anyway,” he said with his arms out to his side in a mock pose. “I heard you come in, you clumsy Englishman, so I figured I’d pop out and say hi. Still feel like heading out tonight? I need just a few more minutes,” he said, half-turned, ready to head back to the shower.
“Yeah, we need to find a pub, don’t we? Get yourself looking presentable. With any luck at all, I’ll find you a senorita tonight. Or one for me, at least.”
“Whatever you say, Sean," Viggo groaned a bit. "You are convinced that I need to get laid, huh? Hmmmm…we’ll see...we'll see, pal.”
With that crooked grin spreading over his face, Viggo turned and headed back toward the shower. “Can’t help but think you’ve got some ulterior motive, friend,” he called with a laugh as the bathroom door closed again.
For some reason, this sounds rather hopeful. [grin] I think that whether or not Sean has an ulterior motive, Viggo's hoping he does. [humming]
And you know, it struck me reading this that when Bob Anderson finally dies it's going to be the end of an era in film. This guy's trained how many of the best sword-swingers in the movies, from Errol Flynn on? When he goes, there should be a day of mourning among film fans around the world.
