The Best Laid Plans… Part 5
As soon as Viggo and Karl entered the room, they were greeted with false accusations of infidelity, coldness of heart and neglect that were angrily denied and countered. All attempts to remain calm and rational were soon forgotten as emotions ran high, fuelled by disappointment, confusion and underlying concern for the man they all loved in one way or another. The man who was now trying to make sense of the incoherent words that sounded like nothing more than a jumbled mess in his still very drowsy and confused mind.
“Will you please all shut the fuck up!”
The spinechilling rasp of Sean’s ‘cold-blooded killer’ persona had the desired effect...instant silence fell, thankfully ending the very loud and heated verbal melee. Even though Sean’s stage experience allowed his voice to carry without him having to shout, the effort required to sound as menacing as possible only aggravated his headache. With an agonised groan, he settled his head gingerly back against the pillows, a grimace of pain causing him to momentarily close his eyes.
“Are you all right, Sean? Do you want me to buzz for the nurse?” Viggo’s softly spoken words and the gentle touch of the fingers entwined with his, were suddenly very familiar, as was the warm affection in the concerned blue eyes that were held entranced by smiling green. No, not affection, but love, Sean acknowledged and without realising what he was doing, he reached up to touch Viggo’s cheek. The Dane could not help but lean into the intimate gesture, starved as he was for some sign the Sean’s memory loss was temporary.
“I’m fine, Vig, no need to worry,” he said, his fingers needing no guidance as they followed a well known path from jaw line to chin to finally brush lightly over lips that were slightly parted to allow a needy moan to escape. The sound broke the spell and Sean quickly pulled his hand away, regretting the lost contact almost immediately. It had felt so right, as if he had found something he was not even aware was missing until now, but he was also afraid he had overstepped the bounds of proper behaviour, especially with Viggo’s boyfriend watching intently from across the room.
Touch me, molest me, do with me what you will, but Sean, please remember you love me, Viggo wanted to scream, overwhe, med as he was vy a sense of loss.. A knife slowly twisting in his heart could not have caused any deeper hurt. Suddenly Viggo felt his knees go weak, and the world spin out of focus but somehow managed to hold himself together, accepting the chair Elijah quickly vacated for the distressed Dane. When it came to his love for Sean, Viggo had always worn his heart on his sleeve, the same heart that his friends could see was now so obviously breaking.
-----------------------
“Shit, Sean will kill him if he keeps that up,” Karl whispered to Orlando who heard the love and concern for Viggo in Karl’s voice and smiled knowingly at his friend.
“I see we suffer from the same affliction, only for me it’s Sean,” Orlando told him.
“What are you talking about?”
“Unrequited love. You and I never stood a chance,” Orlando said, stating the obvious
“So you settled for friendship?”
“Better than not being in his life at all, yeah? Think about it.”
A subtle warning to back off or a friendly offer of advice? Karl was not certain but he suspected it was both.
-----------------------------------
“Are you all right Viggo, you look a little pale there,” Sean asked.
“Yeah, just felt a bit dizzy for a moment,” Viggo replied.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to molest you like that. I don’t know what came over me.” Sean apologised.
“Don’t worry about it Sean, it was certainly more pleasurable than being pinched to see if I am real, I guess. Right Orlando?” Viggo asked, taking refuge from his pain in forced humour and the understanding of the younger man.
“Yeah, and I’ve the bloody bruise to prove it,” Orlando replied with feigned indignation, pointing to a small purplish mark on his upper arm. Sean’s eyebrows rose in alarm.
“Did I really do that? When? I don’t remember.” Sean rolled his eyes at the irony of that comment, he hardly remembered anything.
“Yesterday when you were in emergency. You were really whacked out with painkillers and wanted to prove that I was not some figment of your weird imagination so I told you to pinch me to see if I was real,” he explained.
“Oh. Sorry about that, then lad,” Sean said, a slight red tinge on his cheeks indicating he felt embarrassed at his behaviour and for not remembering it as well.
“Not your fault, but wanna kiss it better anyway?” Orlando asked almost choking with laughter as he fluttered his eyelashes in such an exaggerated act of fake seduction that he looked totally ridiculous.
“What a tart he is,” smirked Billy, speaking in an aside to Dom and Elijah who both sniggered.
“Yeah, and real pretty one at that,” Karl teased, having overheard the comment. Orlando heard too and wiggled his hips as he did a little turn on the spot.
“No yer cheeky little shit, I don’t!” Sean replied, his eyes alight with mirth at the lad’s antics and soon everyone, even Viggo, was chuckling with amusement. The tension in the room had vanished, as had the animosity, much to Sean’s relief but his curiosity remained piqued.
“That’s much better, now would someone care to explain what all the shouting was about?” he asked.
“I think perhaps you and I should have a little chat first, Sean,” Dr Griffith said from the doorway. “That is if your visitors don’t mind being sent outside?”
“Not at all,” Viggo replied for them all, eager to have the doctor examine Sean and hopefully find a way to restore his memory.
“In fact, I think its time we made tracks back to Elijah’s, the beer has probably chilled by now,” Dom said with a smile. “Get well soon, Sean.”
“Thanks Dom, see you later mates. Thanks for the entertainment,” he joked as the others wished him well on their way out.
“Bye Sean, I’ll come see you at home before I fly out,” Orlando said, giving his friend a hug and a quick peck on the cheek.
“Aye lad, be sure you do, and thanks for being here,” Sean replied returning both the hug and the kiss, much to Orlando’s surprised delight. Viggo did likewise. He was well aware of Orlando’s feelings for Sean but in no way felt threatened by them, and he was really very fond of the affectionate young Brit.
“Take good care of him Viggo and don’t worry about Karl. We had a quiet word and I think he understands now,” Orlando said as he closed the door on his way out.
“I guess I will just go wait outside,” Viggo said reluctantly.
“No, please stay, Viggo,” Sean said, halting Viggo’s movement by taking hold of his hand in a firm grasp.
“It’s up to Dr Griffith,” he replied looking toward the other r man.
“First I think it would be easier if you both called me by my given name, Neil. Secondly, Sean needs to hear the truth about the part of his life he has confused in his mind and since those are memories you two share, you are the only one who can answer his questions.”
“Okay, Neil. Now that’s sorted, what is the truth?” Sean asked impatiently.
“As far as your physical condition is concerned, you have a mild concussion as I have already told you. The extra tests I ordered show no sign of scarring on the brain or any other damage. You nurse says that aside from the confusion, and the occasional headache which is to be expected, you are recovering quickly.”
“Are you going to release me today?” Sean asked hopefully.
“I have yet to decide. I think I should let Viggo explain a few things and then we will take it from there. I know this is not easy for you Viggo, but I will be ready to assist you if you need me,” Neil reassured the very nervous man who sat on the bed holding Sean’s hand, and, he felt, their future, in his.
“What do you want to know, Sean? What is causing you the most confusion?” he asked, looking directly into the green depths that he knew so well.
“Are you and Karl lovers?”
“No, we never have been, nor will we,” Viggo answered. He had to make sure Sean understood that before he told him the rest.
“But I did see you kissing him, didn’t I?”
“Yes, the night of my party.”
“What do you remember of that day and night, Sean?” Neil interjected.
“I remember it was a real shit of a day. My flight from London was delayed by fog, then the airline lost my baggage, I had trouble with the hire car company… they gave me this fancy sports car to drive when I kicked up a fuss…I remember thinking… something… about Viggo…about taking Viggo for a ride in it… I think,” Sean realised with surprise as an image of them both admiring the car flashed in his mind. That did not sound quite right, but the memory had gone. “Damn, I almost had it!”
“Try and relax, Sean. You can’t force it to come back to you,” Neil advised. Sean nodded his acquiescence.
“What happened next?” Viggo asked.
“I was delayed by a traffic accident and thought I would miss your birthday entirely. When I drove up to the house I was wondering what else could possibly go wrong,” Sean answered, easily recalling that part of the trip home. “That’s when I saw you kissing Karl…is that when I collapsed?”
“Not exactly, it was after that,” Viggo replied. “Sean, we were having a rather heated and hurtful argument when you collapsed.”
“Really, what about?” Now came the hard part.
“You accused me of betraying you… with Karl.”
“Betrayal? But that would mean …”
“It means we are in a committed relationship. You are the keeper of my heart, my soul mate, and my lover, Sean. I love you more than words can say,” Viggo replied, kissing the fingertips of the hand he still held, willing Sean to remember.
“How long have we been together?” Not quite the reply Viggo was hoping for, but a quick glance at Neil and an encouraging smile gave him the courage to hide his disappointment. Sean should have known the answer to that.
“Since we were filming in New Zealand,” Viggo answered.
Sean remained silent while he digested this information. His body definitely remembered a lover, and a male one at that, he had discovered. If Viggo was speaking the truth, and Sean saw no reason to doubt him, it would certainly explain many things, especially Viggo’s continued presence at his bedside. It also made sense of the displays of affection, the kisses and the devotion to Sean’s welfare and the Brit now understood why he found himself missing Viggo even after only a few hours' absence.
“Sean? Do you have anything to say?” Neil asked, raising a hand to stop Viggo from interrupting.
“What? Oh, sorry, I was just lost in thought,” Sean replied absently.
“Do you remember who Viggo is to you, how you feel about him?”
“I know he is my very best friend, that we share homes here and in England, and that our friendship stems from the fun times we had in New Zealand, but …shit… I don’t want to hurt you Vig…” Sean said, faltering to finish the sentence as he took both Viggo’s hands in his as if his touch could take away the pain he knew his words would cause. The very fact that he knew how Viggo would feel spoke of a deep connection between the two, one that Sean hoped could be restored. Now that he remembered he preferred men, he could easily imagine himself, Karl or any other man for that matter falling in love with Viggo. The man was gorgeous.
“Say it, Sean. We have never kept our feelings from each other, we have never kept secrets and have never been afraid of telling each other anything,” Viggo said, steeling himself for the worst.
“I believe you love me, Viggo, that we are lovers, but I have no memory of how it feels to love you.” Viggo smiled sadly through the tears that had begun to fall and reached up to wipe away Sean’s.
“Then I will simply have to find a way to make you remember.”
