He blinks and is awake immediately, his hand on his sword. Years of sleeping in the wild gave him an instinct. Someone or something is watching him. He turns around when he hears a chuckle. Boromir.

“Your sleep is peaceful, but very light Aragorn. It took just a little sound to wake you.”

“I’ve spent many years not knowing if I would awake meeting friend or foe, Boromir. Being prepared has kept me alive. Why are you here?”

“I was watching you.”

“On what purpose?”

“To learn to know you. Isn’t that why you have been watching me for days?’

‘I have not ------“

“Your eyes would have burned holes in my cloak Ranger. What is it you want?”

“We are the only two men here. I thought we should be more like companions. I feel you are avoiding me.”

“Avoiding you? How could I? There’s only nine here, would be hard to avoid you. And I don’t avoid trouble Aragorn. I fight it.”

“Trouble? You think I mean trouble to you?”

“You claim to be my future King. Perhaps I am just not ready to bow for you. I’ve been fighting all my life for Gondor, ever since I was a little boy. Where were you? Hiding? Who are you to talk about avoiding.”?

“I am not who I am by choice Boromir of Gondor. And I don’t want you to bow for me, I never wanted that, believe me.”

The green eyes held their steady gaze upon him, and roamed his body openly. Then he spoke without restraint.

“I’ll be blunt. Would you bow for me, bend for me? I’d like to share pleasure with you, and the way you looked at me made me think that you wished that too. But I will not bow for you. Here we are just Aragorn and Boromir: I will not let it be anything else.”

Blue eyes never faltered when Aragorn raised and started unbuckling his belt.

“Aragorn and Boromir is what we are. Nothing more and nothing less."
