It wasn't like he wouldn't be back.

Neither of us thought we'd never see each other again.

But our coupling that night was fierce and strong and needy, half-tears mixed with choked groans and gasps of hard won pleasure in the hollow under the tree that first made us believe we might ever be apart.

in my mind, they knew they be together, or that they would find each other again, but the time spent playing those roles...and for viggo/aragorn to feel sean/boromir die beneath him...would have to make even a short parting more scary and meaningful.
