Chapter Summary: The missing gets too much and someone makes a change of plan
Disclaimer: This is all lies and makebelieve. None of this happened...to my knowledge...it's all a product of my filthy imagination. I do not know these people or anything they get up to in the private lives.
Authors Notes: This is set during the filming of LotR. They are already established as a couple. How this happened will be explained in later chapters. Each chapter is quite small...just a warning.

Isn’t it strange how, when you are waiting for something you want to happen, it seems to take forever? Like, when you were a kid, the week leading up to Christmas seemed to take months, like it would never come. Yet, when you actually want time to slow like that, it rushes ahead and gets away from you, leaving you breathless, wondering where the time went, longing to have had it slow down so you could’ve savoured it.

Well, to both Sean and Viggo, everything dragged along at a snails pace. Viggo couldn’t concentrate so had to do take after take after take. He was sure, on any different set with a different set of people who didn’t understand the reasons behind his mood, they would all hate him. As it was, the whole cast and crew could sense and see his misery, could feel his longing and loneliness. They tried their best to coax him into a better mood, but they all knew it would be a pointless exercise, because the medicine he needed was a man called Sean Bean. But, that man wasn’t due back for a week, and they all just hoped and prayed for him to return soon, because not only did they miss him, they could see the emotional stress it was causing Viggo.

Sean, he was in no better shape, but he didn’t have such a caring group looking out for him, trying to cheer him up, keeping him company. All he had was his divorce lawyer, a bottle of scotch and an empty house. He had no idea what he’d been signing, he was glad his lawyer was looking out for him, because if not, he could’ve just signed his life away. But, finally it was over. The divorce papers had all been signed so there was nothing else to do except wait for the official certificate. Sean wouldn’t be here when it came, but he didn’t really care. He knew the divorce was official, his ex knew it was official, and so did his kids, his parents, his family and the entire British tabloids. He sat in the room, it was dark, no lights on, no TV, no music. He sat and drank and smoked, feeling very lonely. More lonely than he’d ever been in his life. He missed Viggo so much it actually hurt. There was a real, deep, physical ache inside him. He needed to see Viggo, he needed to feel him, to hear him, to smell him, taste him. He felt the single lonely tear fall steadily down his cheek and made no move to wipe it away.

He took a deep breath and decided he’d had enough. He had no more business here in England so decided to leave 4 days early. He called his agent to let her know, called the travel agent and changed his flight for one leaving tomorrow evening. With that all done, he stood, finished his drink in one gulp, turned the lights on, and headed upstairs to pack.

He felt a great weight lift from his shoulders just knowing that he would be with Viggo in a couple of days, not 7, but 3. He felt excited and anxious and excited again. The anxiousness was only because of the flight. Normally, he could build up his courage over a couple of days, now he had one. He could do it, he knew he could. He would do it, for Viggo…he would and could do anything.

He couldn’t wait to tell him. Part of him wanted to surprise the other man and just turn up, but if he did that, Viggo would try and call him for his nightly chat and when Sean didn’t answer, he would panic. Plus, he knew how it would cheer his lover up. He could hear how miserable and lonely Viggo sounded, no matter how much he tried to hide it. He was sure Viggo could hear the same in his voice as he tried in vain to hide it. Neither could hide such things from each other, no matter how good an actor they were.

Sean got into the shower and hummed and whistled. He felt such relief. He still missed Viggo liked hell, but he was happy because he knew he would be seeing him in just a couple of days. Not 7 anymore…but 3. Like a prisoner being told they were to be set from 10 years early, Sean started to laugh and bounced on his toes then laughed at his own actions.

He dried himself off, changed into his sweat pants and old Blades t-shirt, checked all his packing was done, that he had everything he needed, passport, cigarettes, clothes, copy of divorce papers (to show Viggo). He’d stop off at the chemists on the way to the airport, because he knew that Viggo wouldn’t be prepared or have the time to gather the essentials.

As he went to go to sleep he felt energised. He couldn’t sleep so decided he would call Viggo. If he wasn’t in, then he’d keep trying until he was. He tried to work out the time difference and it was probably early in the morning in New Zealand.  He knew that Viggo wouldn’t be happy to be woken early, but his lover would forgive him, once he told him the good news.

He settled himself comfortably, propped up against the headboard with pillows; he grabbed his cigarettes, an ashtray and got ready. He may have to be here a while.

He dialled the number and waited.

Tuesday, 6.35am, Viggo’s House, New Zealand

The phone was ringing and Viggo was pissed off about that. He’d had a late night last night. He’d finally been persuaded to go out with the hobbits and the elf because they threatened to keep banging on his door until he did. They said they couldn’t stand him moping about on his own any longer and would drag him out by his balls if necessary.

He hadn’t gotten drunk but he did only get to bed at 2.45 this morning. He wasn’t needed until later that afternoon, and he’d decided to sleep as much as possible, so whoever was ringing him had better have a fucking good reason.

He groped blindly for the bedside cabinet. Something fell off and landed with a thump and his hand got sticky on something, and right now, he really didn’t want to know what that something was. Eventually he managed to get a hold of the noisy fucking thing that had rudely woken him; he coughed a little to clear his throat, his eyes still closed

“h-hello” he croaked

“Hey there Vig!” came a cheery voice. Suddenly Viggo was very awake and not at all pissed off. He sat up sharply, got a little dizzy with the sudden movement

“Sean!” he gasped

“Hey there. I’m sorry to wake you up; I know it’s early…”

“No…no…it’s fine. Erm…is everything ok? Nothing’s happened has it?” Viggo was confused. Sean didn’t sound upset so he didn’t know what had caused his lover to call him so suddenly. They had only talked a few hours ago and Viggo wasn’t due to call him until later on that evening.

“No everything’s fine…better than fine actually. I am now … officially…divorced!!!”

“Wow! That was over fast!”

“Yeah…good lawyers, not a lot of fuss on either side. Signed all the papers today. Just gotta wait on the certificate. But…that isn’t the best news Vig.”

“What d’ya mean?” It was too early and he was too tired for guessing games, but a little flutter of excitement and hope was building in his system that Sean would be coming back early, seeing as how his divorce was settled.

“Well…I would suggest you keep…” he paused to work out the day in New Zealand “…Friday and the whole sodding weekend free…because I’m coming back!!

“Oh my god!!! Really??!!” Viggo was flushed with excitement. 3 days!! 3 days and Sean would be here. Not 7, but 3!!!

“Yep. Booked the flight just now. I didn’t have anything else to do here, me girls are all at school, I’ve seen me family…my divorce is finalised, no reason for me to stay…and one…really really big thing to leave for!!”

“Oh my god!!!! I can’t wait to see you…ohhh I’m so happy Sean. You’ve made my day and it’s only 6.30 in the morning!!!”

“I’m glad! I’m happy too love. I was miserable here without you…as soon as the divorce was settled I couldn’t stand it any longer. My flight leaves tomorrow…Tuesday at 9.45pm London time and arrives at 11.30pm Thursday. Which for you is…ermm…Christ I hate figuring out time differences. …I leave 9.45am Wednesday morning and it’s due into Wellington at…erm….oh shite…ermm…11.30am Friday…ish…I think…shite…I don’t know…can’t think straight…too excited!!!”

“Don’t worry baby…you’re coming back early is all I care about!!! Oh…ermmm…you gonna be ok…with the flight and everything??? You won’t have had time to prepare or anything…”

“It’ll be fine. I’m planning on not sleeping tonight or tomorrow and just be so knackered I fall asleep. Might take some sleeping pills to help. Anyway…couldn’t sleep even if I wanted to. Can’t wait to see you love.

“I can’t wait either…God! I’m so happy you’re doing this Sean.”

“I’m happy I’m doing this. I was going outta my mind. The divorce, no one around, missing you…”

Viggo could read between those lines. Sean had felt lonely. Very lonely. He’d probably gotten drunk a lot. He could understand that. Viggo knew he was the luckiest one in this situation, having so many friends around him so if he was lonely he always had someone he could talk too. But Sean…he’d been truly alone. He could talk to people on the phone, but that wasn’t enough. He knew it. He felt a great sense of sadness at thinking of Sean sitting all alone in his house, no one to talk to, no one to see him, drinking, probably in the dark. In sent a deep pain through him,

”Well…you won’t be alone for much longer baby. I’m gonna be at the airport to meet you. Don’t care what time, or what’s happening here…Peter will not stop me meeting you.”

“Vig…you don’t have to do that…I know your schedules all over the place now…”

“Shush…won’t hear it Sean…I will be there and you can’t stop me either!!”

“Shite Vig…don’t know why I bother arguing with you…I never win!”

“Exactly…so just get used to it!!!”

“God…love it when you get all… ‘kingly’”

“‘Kingly’? Is that even a word?”

“Probably not…you know I ain’t too good with words”

“You sound just fine to me”

“Well…you’re biased”

“A little…doesn’t make it any less true!”

“Again with the losing of the argument!!

The bickered and teased each other for a long time, just enjoying the feeling of relief. Eventually, someone had to hang up; they couldn’t stay on the phone all day. Viggo really needed to sleep or he’d fall asleep on set again

“I’ve gotta go Sean…I hate to…but I need to get some sleep.”

“Oh fuck…I’m sorry love. I should’ve waited until later on to call you…I was just so excited and…”

“Sean…it’s ok…really. I’m glad you called. With news like that, I wouldn’t have wanted to wait. I’ll cancel my lunch with Ian…he’ll understand. It’s no problem. You gonna be ok? With the flight and everything?”

“I’ll be fine. Look…I won’t be able to speak to you for a while and you know how I am about flying so…”

“Don’t say it Sean…please” Viggo begged.

Viggo knew what was coming. Sean was always like this before any kind of flight. He always spoke as if he would never see you again. Almost like saying his goodbyes. He knew why he did it and he knew if Sean didn’t he wouldn’t be able to get on that plane. He understood, didn’t mean he liked it. It hurt him, because the very thought of anything happening to Sean made him feel like he’d been shot in the heart with ice, the cold flowing through his veins, chilling his very soul.

“I’m sorry Love…I can’t help it…I love you so much. You mean the world to me Vig…you make me so happy. I’d hate it if something…I didn’t…and you didn’t know…”

“I know it Sean. I love you too, you are everything to me. Now…you get on that plane tomorrow and get your hot little ass here”

“Yeah ok…sorry Vig…I didn’t mean to…you know…”

“I know you didn’t…it’s fine. You’ll be fine, everything will be fine. Don’t make me get on ‘kingly’ on you!!”

With that Sean laughed heartily and that made Viggo smile. The tense moment was gone and they chatted for a few minutes then they ended the call with words of love, and few sniffles from Viggo’s end and promises of return.

I think we could all use that medicine! I really like how you depict their excitement at the change in plans. Almost boyish, which is great.

"Viggo knew he was the luckiest one in this situation, having so many friends around him so if he was lonely he always had someone he could talk too. But Sean…he’d been truly alone."

It's almost wistful at that stage, but they're both so thrilled with the news that it makes up for the sadness.

It's wonderful to see how much they love each other that one can't wait (like at child at Christmas!) to tell his news and the other doesn't mind the wake-up call!
