Boromir has command of the toasting forks, lined up against the high fender. With Arin’s help he’s ensuring a golden crust on the bread, crisp outside yet soft within.

 

As each slice lands hot and gilded on the plate before her, Arwen covers it thickly with brandy butter that melts in a burst of sweet fumes. She cuts it into fingers and Eldarion distributes the bounty to the company, although it’s a struggle not to eat as many as he hands over. Aragorn, smiling broadly, wields a flagon of spiced ale, re-filling cups and surveys his realm, a happy man.

Capture of a lovely moment. You choose the right words to stretch the scene and allow the reader to experience the same warmth of the four characters.

Thanks for reading. I wanted to contrast this 'small' scene with their usual persona as warriors and leaders, yet show them tackling this challenge with the same gusto, so I used vocabulary with military connections (command, company, wields) to describe them in the domestic setting. Happy that you liked it.

And it's funny because what I saw were the contrasting words to those military words: crisp, soft, sweet, happy.

That's why it works, if it works - there's a happy incongruity between Boromir having 'command' of the row of toasting forks propped against the high fender (think ranks of spears appearing from behind the Deeping Wall) and what he's actually doing.

Thankyou for reading and for your kind feedback. I think happiness is under-rated, or perhaps rather that it's sometimes hard to locate it within specific moments we can write about. I liked this scene because the 'big' characters were happy doing 'small' things - that aren't small in the long run (we remember and cherish family traditions). I'm glad it spoke to you too.

I'm so glad you liked it. At the end of a tough year, I thought they deserved a moment or two.
Not sure if toast and brandy butter would be appropriate for breakfast, although now you come to mention it, toast spread with rum butter and then bitter orange marmalade might just about work...tooth achingly sweet, but fun.

Glad you liked it - just a little moment. I always see it as being difficult to get him to relax - probably impossible to 'make' him relax unless he can see those around him safe and happy too.
